Obligatory "I Wrote A Thing!" Post

Source here

Howdy to all you folks that actually read this blog. You rock, don't let anyone tell you any different. It's been super-busy on my end of things, and life just got busier. Fret not! I plan on posting much more madness when I can...not that there's a lot to see here, anyway.

So, I wrote this thing yesterday and voiced this thing for PapaKennMedia.com (@PapaKennMedia on Twitter), which is something called "Monday Movie Maniac"; it's just this article I write talking about horrible villains in movies, what makes them a "maniac" and the little things about the evil-doers that just really get under my skin. Sorta.

If you check it out, let me know what you think. :)

Don't Be Like Me, Just Learn Something

Just going to put this out there, and it will be in the best interest of those who I've worked with previously and not heard from, and to anyone who would want me for future voice things: In the past four months, I've sent twelve sets of recorded audio to the same number of folks who have asked me to participate in their machinimas/fanvideos. This has been a significant amount of work, and I gotta say, unless you've answered my messages and e-mails then I am so, so very disappointed and let down.

I've only heard back from three of the groups that have asked me to participate in their projects. That being said, it is more than a little uncomfortable to send out audio I've worked hard on, to creators who will not send me some kind of message acknowledging it. I don't have to put up with that, and I'm sure as creators, you want dedicated people handing in their work to you in a timely manner.

In the next week or so, I'll be uploading documentation to my blog that will require anyone who wants my voice for their projects to look over, electronically sign (or show some proof of legit understanding of my terms and conditions on getting voice work completed) and then turn in to me.

I'm more than fed up with being stepped on and shoved aside by creators who really don't think they should give me the time of day after I work hard on something for them. No one should have to put up with that, whether you're a producer, creator, entertainer, etc. It isn't fun! I love voice acting and doing voice-over work for folks, it's my passion! I'd never dream of trying to pull the wool over someone's eyes and fool them into paying me for work I've never done. Why would anyone do that to another voice actor? People are silly and can be jerks sometimes, that's why.

This zone is "jerk free" unless there's talk about jerk chicken. Have you ever had jerk chicken? It's delicious, get on Pinterest for a recipe.

All it takes is some communicating back and forth with me, but if that can't be accomplished, then I really don't need to hand over my work to that person/group/collaborator/whatever. I'm here to work and have fun, and not be some temporary idea for some random thought to feed someone's ego or fill their free time. I know my voice is worth something, and I know how much hard work I put into what I do.

/end rant

Is it my own fault for not being sure I work for legit people? Yes. Is it my responsibility to make sure I take the steps necessary to ensure the proper use of my audio? Yes. Yes and yes. I'm kind of an idiot for not taking precautions, and that three hour audio book I read through for a client? Not getting paid. Deleted from Skype and her e-mail address apparently doesn't exist anymore. Those clips I sent in for a late-night radio show as a robot DJ? No, he doesn't "feel like" working on the collaboration anymore. Everything else? It's a loss, but I am going to let it go and move on.

Have we learned something here folks? Yes, yes we have! Don't be like me, just learn from my mistakes.

1) Know who you are working for, do your research and ask for references.
2) Be kind and treat yourself to work that will only ensure the best of your voice brought forward.
3) See #2.
4) See #1.

If you're looking for more tips on how to protect your voice AND your reputation, here's an article outlining some other stuff I learned the hard way back in the Spring of 2011. Read it. You'll be glad you did.

Thank you for reading this. I started this blog to offer some of what I know, have learned and am doing at the moment in the world of voice things. Leave me a comment or a note if you want to share anything in return, my ears are always open to you. :)

Now here's a picture of a Thin Mint donut to go with your day. You're welcome.

Voice Acting Tip: Your Voice Is Your Everything

I started doing voice work back in the winter of 2011, so I'm not an expert, I'm not a coach and I am definitely not voicing a Teen Titan or any of the Disney fairies. BUT! I've learned a thing or two along the way. I'll share the bits that I've learned in hopes that I'm a) teaching you something helpful that'll help you with your talent and b) not screw up in the process. I hear plenty of reels and clips from newbie voice actors and sometimes I cringe. I cringe because they, like me, weren't given the guidance or advice needed to really show off their talent. I refuse to share my earlier voice reels because they are just that terrible. I refuse, adamantly. No. So, now? If I saw someone drowning, I'd hop into the water to save them. Wouldn't you? Good! That's why I've got this blog started so I can share some of what I've learned. So, here goes, the first tip: Know how to use your voice.

I know what you're thinking.

"But, I've got a voice. What does that even mean?"

No...stop.

"I'm serious, I HAVE a voice and I KNOW how to use it, what the fu-"

STAHP.

Read.

Everyone has a voice, unless you were born mute or went through something tragic (like an accident or were hit with a tragic sickness that rendered you voiceless), you have one. You speak with it, you voice your opinion, your hardships, your joys, your moments of "BAZINGA!" and everything in-between. A good way to begin to use your voice talent properly, is to be aware of this important fact: your voice talent is NOT just your voice. It is your everything, if you were a painter it'd be your brush. If you were a ballet dancer, your voice talent would be your tutu. So, here's the mantra: "My voice talent is NOT just my voice."

Knowing that your voice talent isn't just your voice seems kind of confusing, doesn't it? That's fine. It should. If it doesn't confuse you, then you're further ahead than most. Hooray to you! For those of us who still struggle with distinguishing our voice from our voice talent, (I have my days, too) read further and give this a try: record yourself saying the following line. Pick any emotion/style you want: serious, happy, sad, narrative, character, commercial, etc. Practice makes perfect!

And...go, hit that record button like it owes you money:
:
"My voice talent is NOT just my voice."

After you've recorded this, listen to it. I don't mean that you should just play it back. I mean listen to it. Is the emotion/style you were going for to your liking? What's your sound quality like? Do you sound different than you thought you did, or did you do worse or better than you thought you were going to? None of those questions have a right or wrong answer. If you think you need improving, do so, practice the above exercise to start and then move onto larger readings.

Sidenote: It's okay to think this...

Sometimes I do, no joke.

I hope this post helped you out a bit. Leave me some commentary on what you think, or if you have anything to add, place it into a comment with your Twitter or blog address and I'll include it in a future post. Thanks for reading. :)

Nutella and Banana Popsicles

This.

This is a jar of Nutella. I used one tablespoon of this stuff.

Featuring my hand and shitty spice cabinet!

These are bananas. I mashed up two of them and mixed them in with the Nutella.

And then I poured the mix into popsicle-shaper things to make something similar to this, with a half cup of milk.

Source unknown, if you know, tell me in a comment!

There are no pictures of the final product because I wanted to eat them. Badly. But, I do declare...it was good. One tonight, saving the other for tomorrow.

Don't judge me. It's Nutella for pete's sake!

The Obligatory "About Me" Post

Ever since I was a kid, I've enjoyed making people laugh even if it happened to be at my own expense. I didn't care then, and I don't think I do now. Sometimes I do, but then I remember that one quote by Dr. Seuss and then everything in my world is just fine. Mimicking random voices and making up my own were one of the ways I did that. Sometimes I used hand-puppets and, sometimes I still do. I'm just weird, okay?  Here's some stuff to know about me so that you, the reader, can find proper enjoyment while perusing this blog:
  • I'm kinda sarcastic.
  • I'm extremely random.
  • I really don't care what other people think.
  • I love voice acting! (Redundancy is a thing with me.)
  • I repeat myself a lot.
  • I have three cats.
  • Weird stuff humors me and I like to share it.
  • I share the stuff friends send me. Example: If someone links me to a chocolate anus, it's getting posted.
  • I live in Portland, Oregon!
  • I recently gave up my role as a freelance e-commerce/internet marketing consultant so that I could further pursue voice acting and pursue my talent.
  • I like food that's bad for you.
  • I like healthy food that's not bad for you.
  • This blog will most likely go off-topic from voice acting.
  • I'll try hard not to use curse words, but I can't make any promises.
You're an angel and I adore you for reading this far. Have a kitty.

And this guy.
